  there's a great book about the scrabble subculture called "word freak.

  " i read it last year because i was considering joining a local scrabble group.

  however, after reading the book, i realized i'm what the "word freaks" call a good living room player and nothing more.

  Ooooohhh, do I have pointers.
  
  
  Buy an official Scrabble dictionary ($6, I think) and memorize all the weird two letter words that no one who doesn't play Scrabble would ever know. There are also ten U-less Q words to learn.
  
  
  When you play a word like XI or XU and your opponent asks you what it means, just say I don't know. They'll think you're playing a fake word and challenge you and they'll lose a turn.
  
  
  Once you play a strange word and it turns out to be legit, you can sometimes make things up and nobody will challenge you. I love a good bluff.
  
  
  I could go on and on, but I'll shut up. Can you tell I can't find anyone to play with me anymore? i have to play against my computer.
  
  
  I highly recommend the book, not just for the Scrabble stuff. It's a fascinating subculture with some very interesting characters.

  Did Jim Crow affect Italians or Irishmen?

  Were they reduced to being 3/5ths of a man when they came to ashore?

  Were they allowed to be raped and pillaged through groups organized and given public support for just that purpose?

  Were they denied the right to vote and particpate in public life for hundreds of years?

  These are all great questions. And the last one is still relevant, considering what happened in Florida in the 2000 election.

  There's a great book about the Scrabble subculture called "Word Freak." I read it last year because I was considering joining a local Scrabble group. However, after reading the book, I realized I'm what the "word freaks" call a good living room player and nothing more.

  I've loved Scrabble since I was a little kid and became rather famous in my congregation for whupping the adults. When I was 10 years old, this sister with really low self-esteem challenged me to a game and I beat her somethin' fierce. She was really sarcastic to me after that and so I started losing intentionally now and then.

  Anyhoooo, this book has a section on anagrams, which is a really key skill for a good Scrabble player. It tells about the history of anagrams and I found the following particularly interesting.

  In the Book of John, Pontius Pilate asks Jesus, "Quid est veritas?" (What is truth?) His answer is an anagram: "Est vir qui adest." (It is the man who is before you.) For some reason, when I read that, it made me really love Jesus for a minute and not just because he apparently is truth.

  Here's my favorite anagram of all time: "President Clinton of the USA" turns into "to copulate, he finds interns." What are the odds???

  he gave me the booklet, "keep on the watch.

  " according to him, the speaker who introduced the booklet talked about the people who were stumbled because of the change in understanding regarding "this generation.

  i read this article in the montreal gazette that talked about a young witness kid being bullied in school.

  it made me think back to all the times i was treated differently in school for being a jehovah's witness.

  i grew up in a predominately mexican community and went to public school there from 1st-12th grade as a jw.

  Interesting topic, Wick. Your story brought back some memories for me.

  I can remember being in kindergarten, 5 years old, standing on the playground, surrounded by older kids yelling, "Jehovah jerk! Jehovah jerk!"

  When I was in 2nd grade, my teacher was the wife of the local Nazarene church pastor. She hated JW kids and so she would use any excuse to grab us by the arms and dig her long, blood red fingernails into our skin. My brother and I had her in successive years and my parents put up the marks on our arms for a while, but then they'd go talk to the principal and he would make her stop. RIP, Mrs. Tierney.

Scientists at the National Cancer Institute examined, over eight years, the self-reported ejaculation frquency of nearly 30,000 men. Those who came most often -- a lifetime average of 21 times a month -- were one-third less likely to develop organ-confined or slow-growing prostate cancer than the control group of men, who came four to seven times a month. The study found a benefit in men who had more than 12 orgasms a month. Regular ejaculation may be beneficial because it flushes out carcinogens in the gland. Come for life. And get an exam annually after you hit 50. If you're African-American or have a family history of prostate cancer, start at 40.

  It was a very interesting read. Sounds like they're on the lookout for apostates, I really appreciated your tactic of hiding in plain sight.
